About Hibiscus Flower Powder.
Hibiscus, known as gudhal or jaswand, is the bright red flower found in so many Indian gardens and temples. Dried and ground, its petals make a deep red powder with a tart, cranberry-like taste.
Our hibiscus powder is 100% dried hibiscus flowers. Nothing is added.
Hibiscus tea
- Stir half a teaspoon of powder into a cup of hot water.
- Steep for 3 to 5 minutes, then strain through a fine strainer or cloth.
- Add honey and a slice of lemon or ginger.
For iced hibiscus tea, make it double strength, cool, and pour over ice with mint. It turns a beautiful ruby red.
Hibiscus for hair
Hibiscus has long been part of South Indian home hair care:
- Hair pack: mix two to three tablespoons with curd or aloe vera gel into a paste. Apply for 20 to 30 minutes, then rinse.
- With amla: combine with amla powder for a classic conditioning pack.
- In hair oil: warm a spoon in coconut oil, cool, and strain.
Hibiscus can leave a faint reddish tint on light or grey hair.
In the kitchen
Use a pinch as a natural pink colour in sherbets, lemonade, jellies and icing.
